Manuel Azaņa: emergency system unique in Spain

The speedy and simple evacuation of passengers from the Manuel Azaņa Manuel Azaņa is ensured by an emergency system unique in Spain: the floating chutes. The Manuel Azaņa is equipped with two of these chutes: one on the starboard bow and another on the port side stern.

In case of emergency, the crew will activate these chutes, which will inflate in a few seconds. Each chute takes the passengers onto a large distribution platform with a capacity for one hundred people. The rescue boats can be boarded from this platform, of which the Manuel Azaņa is equipped with the sufficient number to evacuate all the passengers and crew. The boats are connected to the chute so that when they are full of passengers they separate from the evacuation system and can be independently navigated. As the rescue boats are filled, new ones descend, which also inflate in a few seconds on making contact with the water. This efficient system enables approximately 450 people to abandon ship every 30 minutes.

This evacuation system, designed by the Danish company Viking -with longstanding experience and highly respected in the maritime world- means that the Manuel Azaņa occupies a leading position amongst the safest ships in Europe according to a study made by RACE and other European motoring associations.
